AdBlue seemed simple enough, so it went to the bottom of our list of problems. In 2009 Mercedes added the AdBlue system. As time and miles go by, the system gets deeper into trouble.

As the engine runs, this will show you how one thing leads to another. It shows you where everything is located and what starts the trouble. It’s a good fundamental starting point for most owners. I’ve temporarily written up the basic BlueTEC operation with a diagram of the system with all of its components. There’s so much information its even a challenge for Engineers. It’s forced me to add and change the information I’ve saved over the years. Since Mercedes started the AEM emissions recall, things have been changing so fast it’s hard to keep up.

I can’t assume people understand the basics of this engine. I recently had a number of new owners contact me. Most owners don’t understand this engine and emission system. I’ve done this for so long I gradually assumed owners understood the basics of the BlueTEC operation. Disregard any reference I make to the Mercedes DPF monitor. There’s a new DPF monitor that’s vastly superior to the genuine Mercedes DPF monitor and it cost a fraction of the Mercedes price. A good starting place is with monitoring the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and understanding its operation. The more you know about your BlueTec, the less it will cost to maintain. There’s lots of things you can do to help your Mechanic diagnose the repair. Owners have to make some effort to educate themselves about the BlueTEC. If you don’t want some crazy repair bill, you have to help the Mechanic with useful information. We’re past the point where owners can just hand the keys to the Service Advisor and show up at the end of the day to pay the bill. No one knows what’s wrong and the Mechanic is just throwing parts at the problem. Owners are always sending me copies of outrageous repair bills. In many areas it’s hard to find a Mechanic who’ll work on a BlueTEC. Many Independent Mercedes shops stopped working on the BlueTEC diesels. Experienced Mechanics grew tired of being blamed for the problems and not getting any help. It took a while, but Mechanics finally realized they couldn’t trust the diagnostic information Mercedes was giving them. In the past, Mercedes always worked hard to keep Mechanics in the loop. Nobody really understood what was causing these problems. At first it was oil leaks and Check Engine lights (CEL). The euphoria lasted a few years and then the problems started. At first everyone was thrilled with the performance. I started this article shortly after Mercedes introduced the BlueTEC diesel in 2007. I no longer have any affiliation with Mercedes-Benz or its authorized dealers. After 50 years working with and for Mercedes-Benz as a Mechanic, Shop Foreman, Instructor, Service Manager and Shop Owner I retired in 2018.
